About the Division of Counselling Psychology (DCoP)

The Division of Counselling Psychology (DCoP) is a professional division under the Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS). We represent Counselling Psychologists in Hong Kong, dedicated to safeguarding professional standards and promoting psychological well-being within the community.

What is Counselling Psychology?

Counselling Psychology is a distinct psychological speciality that embraces the Scientist-Practitioner model. We emphasise a holistic and evidence-based approach to facilitate personal and interpersonal functioning across the lifespan. Counselling psychologists highly value multicultural competence, person-environment fit, and respect for diversity.

Our distinctive contribution lies in a comprehensive model of care that serves three complementary roles:

  • Remedial: Assisting individuals and groups in resolving psychological distress and overcoming life crises.
  • Preventive: Promoting psychoeducation and anticipating potential difficulties before they escalate.
  • Developmental: Enhancing personal growth, realising human potential, and optimising effectiveness.

The collaboration between DCoP and HKSYU is built upon a profound professional heritage. HKSYU stands as a true trailblazer, being the first institution in Hong Kong—and indeed in Asia—to provide a dedicated postgraduate training programme aimed at cultivating locally trained counselling psychologists.

While DCoP establishes the standards for clinical practice and professional ethics in the city, HKSYU continues to serve as the vital academic cradle for the profession. Together, this partnership perfectly embodies the “Scientist-Practitioner” framework, seamlessly bridging rigorous academic research with clinical excellence to nurture generations of psychological professionals.
